Jamestown: Legend of the Lost Colony Review

Hello everyone! Me and Plasmatic Blood have been hard at work doing nothing these past 2 weeks. Playing games and DND we enjoyed ourselves. Plus both of us have Star Wars: the Old Republic (Bounty Hunters FTW) and we’ve been playing the crap out of that game. But I digress, Jamestown: Legend of the Lost Colony is an alternative history scenario that puts a question in our heads, how did the developers come up with this idea? Basically the British colonize Mars instead of  The New World. There enemies include the Indians who are allied with Martians living on the red rock. I was quickly immersed in the game, trying to dodge incoming fire and at the same time trying to kill the enemy with my beam cannon. The game goes back to good old fashioned 2D shoot ’em up fun. Cooperative mode is available but local only which means hooking up a Xbox controller to your PC.

"Don't cross the beams, it would be bad."

With the magic of DLC, the already awesome 5 levels expands into more content that you have to purchase on Steam. You can choose 3 other ships with better beams or different fire abilities which all are better on some levels than others. There are 5 difficulty levels, Normal, Difficult, Legendary, Divine, and if you beat all the levels on Divine you unlock Judgement difficulty. I thought Divine was hard enough good luck with Judgement.  The story is weird but solid, the art is old school pixel art that renders remarkably well.

Currently this game is running at $5 dollars but will go back up once the Steam sale is over. I loved this game, its fairly short but charming, the ships were great and these kind of 2D games were some of my favorite during the arcade glory years. All in all the good folks at Final Form Games did good on the Indie front.

Happy New Year everyone!

P.S The Minecraft challenge ends tomorrow!

Command & Conquer Renegade X

There has been this mod floating around still in Beta form called Renegade-X:Black Dawn. Since being a C&C fan since Tiberium Sun up until C&C 4 (which sucked)this is the best news I’ve heard in a long time for old school remakes that I enjoy playing.

They made only slight graphical changes from this picture BUT this is only in beta form still. They used the Unreal Tournament Engine (UDK) to make this possible with a couple of old music and sound effects from the original Renegade. This mod is free and will be released completely on January 28th 2012. If you want to download the mod now click the link above.

Technology, games, false advertising, and all associated bullshit…

So, this last week, I started looking more into the technology behind, phones, game consoles, games, computers and a lot of other stuff. This resulted in me realizing how much money companies are spending on NOT getting sued. One example on the smart phone side of things is that apple recently released the newest iPhone with the new siri app which in multiple accounts, apple employees said it was the first app of its kinda to allow people to actually tell their phone what to do besides call people. The official commercial and internet sources will say it’s not the first, but is one of the best. In reality, it just shows how egotistic apple really is because the iPhone’s competitor, the Windows Phone 7, including models like the HTC Trophy, have had a similar and simpler version of the app for almost 2 years now.

On the gaming side of things, a lot of gamers believe anything developers tell them. DICE has by far created the best engine for making games with destructible environments, but right before they could release Bad Company 1 with the first installment of the Frostbite engine, Red Faction Geurilla was released with an unimaginable amount of destruction available to players.

false advertising is everywhere….. mostly in personal interviews, but inflated ego’s  will always prevail. Just the way I like it.

Back to League of Legends and mass amounts of research for my x-mas list….
